Why it matters

What Is llms.txt — and Why AI Answer Engines Need It

Short answer: llms.txt is a one-file Markdown index that tells LLM crawlers — the robots behind ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude answers — what your site is about and which pages matter, so they can fetch and cite them instead of guessing from a raw crawl.

When an AI answer engine researches a question, its crawler has toread your page before it can cite it. A sprawling site gives the crawler thousands of pages of near-duplicate noise; an llms.txt gives it your editorial signal: the site name, the one-paragraph summary, and the links worth reading — in the order you choose. This is the same audience as GEO itself: answer engines, not just search indexes.

The format is intentionally simple — an H1 title, a blockquote summary, optional H2 sections and markdown links — which is why this llms.txt generator can produce a compliant file in seconds and the validator below can check one just as fast. No schema tree, no namespace, no build step.

How it works

How to Create llms.txt in Three Steps

  1. 1. Write the header

Site name as # Title, then a > summary — two lines that tell an LLM who you are before it reads a single link.

  2. 2. Curate the links

Import your XML sitemap and delete the noise, or add links by hand. Keep entries in- [Page Title](URL): description form — described links give models context, order gives them priorities.

  3. 3. Deploy & validate

Download llms.txt, upload it to your domain root, then run this page’s validator whenever the file changes.

llms.txt vs sitemap.xml vs robots.txt

robots.txt

Permissions — who may crawl, and what they may not. It never says what to read.

sitemap.xml

Discovery for classic search engines — every URL, no editorial judgement.

llms.txt

Context for LLM crawlers — a curated, summarized index written for models.

🔒 Privacy: all three formats here are public site data, but this builder still keeps yours private — parsing happens in your browser, and URL fetches go only through AIGEOKit’s own edge function.

FAQ

llms.txt, Explained

What is an llms.txt file?

llms.txt is an open, proposed standard — a plain Markdown file served at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt — that gives AI models a concise, human-curated index of a website. It starts with the site name as an H1 title, a one-line blockquote summary, and then the links that matter most. Where sitemap.xml lists every URL for traditional search crawlers, llms.txt is written for the LLM crawlers behind ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and similar answer engines, so they can understand what your site is about before they fetch and cite it. The convention is documented at llmstxt.org.

How to create llms.txt for my website?

Three steps: (1) enter your site name and a one-line summary — they become the # title and the > blockquote; (2) add your pages, either manually or by importing your XML sitemap (paste the XML, or give the sitemap URL and this tool fetches it through AIGEOKit’s first-party proxy); (3) hit Copy Markdown and save the result as a file named llms.txt. Then run your file through the validator below to confirm the structure is standard before you upload it. If your site has more than roughly 20 links, add the optional [llms-full.txt](…) link to keep the short file scannable.

How do I deploy llms.txt on my site?

Upload the file to the root of your domain so it is publicly reachable at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt — no login, no bot protection. Any static host works: Netlify, Vercel, Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages, an nginx webroot or a CDN. Serve it as UTF-8 text (text/plain is fine), update it whenever your site structure changes — new sections, retired products, renamed pages — and re-run the validator after every change. On WordPress, place the file in the site root or serve /llms.txt through a small rewrite rule.

What are the benefits of llms.txt for AI Search and GEO?

AI answer engines can only cite what their crawlers can find and parse. A clean llms.txt gives them a curated map instead of the raw crawl frontier: your best pages, in the order you prefer, with a summary you control. That raises the chance an answer engine picks your page as a source — and for generative engine optimization (GEO), llms.txt complements robots.txt: robots.txt tells crawlers what is allowed (or not), llms.txt tells them what is worth reading. It is especially valuable for JavaScript-heavy or sprawling sites where automatic extraction is expensive or noisy.

What is the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?

Both are Markdown files from the same proposal family. llms.txt is the short, curated index — title, summary and the key links — compact enough for an LLM to consume quickly. llms-full.txt is an optional sibling that can hold more complete information when you have a lot to share. In practice, most sites only need a good llms.txt; the builder adds an optional llms-full.txt link field and suggests it automatically once your link list grows past ~20 entries.

Does llms.txt affect Google rankings?

No — Google and Bing read sitemap.xml and robots.txt, not llms.txt, so the file does not directly change traditional rankings. Its audience is LLM-based discovery: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and the growing set of AI crawlers that follow the llmstxt.org convention. Publishing it is harmless for crawlers that ignore it, and it is increasingly a free signal for AI search visibility, which is exactly where GEO focuses.

Is my sitemap or site data sent anywhere?

No third party ever sees it. The generator, preview and validator all run 100% in your browser. Pasting sitemap XML is parsed locally with zero network traffic. If you paste a sitemap URL instead, it is fetched only by AIGEOKit’s own edge function — the same first-party posture as our Robots.txt Checker — and nothing is logged or stored.
